WHAT'S DRIVES YOU TO BE A GREAT ARCHITECT? MONEY? Needless to say, money is a requirement for a successful lifestyle and, of course, one of the main performance assessment factors "All my life I have worked to be able to earn my living, but I thought thot one could do good painting without attracting attention to one's private life. Certainly, an artist wishes to raise himself intellectually as much as possible but de man must remain obscure. The pleasure must be found in the work.” - Paul Cezanne TRYING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Choosing a career that allows us to contribute to society allows us gain mental peace and helps us find opportunities to live a fulfilling life rather than only joining the grind. “The purpose of life is not to be happy. R is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY? Architectural is more than j...

What is Digital Architecture? Digital Architecture is a field of engineering that utilizes digital media in the process of its architectural design. Digital Architecture will help in designing the concept, design development, and detail designing of the architecture's form. What do Students Learn?   During the course the students will be studying the various digital software tools design processes (parametric and generative), architectural visualization, advanced construction, and building automation. The programme is meant for practicing architects and designers to re-organize the design process and employ technology to embrace the emergent practice of non-standard architecture.                                                            ...
PUBLIC SPACE/PRIVATE SPACE Public Space Of all the things considered when designing, whether architecture or city planning, among the most important are private and public space, and the transition between the two.  There are times when the need is obvious, private space in a residence for instance, and other times when it's more ambiguous, such as in the case of privately owned public spaces where who the "public" is can be widely interpreted.  The move between private and public spaces can also vary from a well defined boundary to a more loose transition.  These ambiguities are increasing especially in this time of increased connectivity. Throughout history the outdoors has been considered the ultimate public space.  For millennia people have gathered outdoors for the most basic of activities from celebrations, sharing news, preparing and consuming food, and socializing.  Outdoor public spaces can take many forms, there are spaces that have been d...
“PLACE” vs “SPACE” The  ‘Re-Space-ing Place: “Place” and “Space” Ten Years On’  article   took me two days to read and digest the ideas it conveyed. The main concept within it is the difference between Space and Place and the development of these situations with the emergence of ubiquitous technologies. “space is the opportunity; place is the (understood) reality.” This is the broad distinction as discussed in the original paper 10 years ago. From my understanding space is designed for a particular purpose and is used to manipulate behaviour of the user. Architects design spaces for particular functions. Place is where users appropriate space, inhabit it, maybe even change its function. For example, one of my favourite places in  London  is the South Bank and one of the most interesting spots along the river is the skate park. It is full of great graffiti and always has a good atmosphere. This area was never designed for this use. It was descri...

What is Architecture?

What is Architecture Architecture is a passion, a vocation, a calling – as well as a science and a business. It has been described as a social art and also an artful science. Architecture must be of the highest quality of design. Architecture provides, in the words of Marcus Vitruvius, the great Roman architect and historian, “firmness, commodity and delight” Architecture provides a sense of place and support of all types of human activity. Architecture helps the man-made fit in harmony with the environment while promoting health and well-being, enriching lives aesthetically and spiritually, providing economic opportunities, and creating a legacy that reflects and symbolizes culture and traditions. 1 1st Century BC Roman Architect Vitruvius is the author of the treatise De architectura. The work is divided into 10 books dealing with city planning and architecture in general; building materials; temple construction; public buildings; private buildings; clocks; hy...
